History / Heritage


 

Diamond Harbour Health District was created through a Notification by the Government of West Bengal on 01.04.2013.Since 01.04.2016 the Government of India has accepted a separate financial functioning of this Health District Programme Management Unit under National Health Mission.

The Health District Geographic Jurisdiction is limited to the Sub Divisions of Diamond Harbour and Kakdwip of South 24 Parganas.

The Population of the Health District is 3304282.

Administrative Units

There are 13 Blocks & One Municipality in the Health District.

Administrative Set up

The Health Administration set up is headed by The Chief Medical Officer of Health under whom there are 4 Officers in the Rank of Deputy Chief Medical Officers who support the Chief Medical Officer in matters of Health Management and National Health Programmes. There is one District Public Health Nursing Officers who looks after Public Health and Nursing Matters. The two sub divisions are headed by two Assistant Chief Medical Officers and the 13 blocks are headed by one Block Medical Officer. There are Two 300 bedded Multi Superspeciality Hospitals in each sub division which are presently running first phase Outdoor and Indoor Services. At Diamond Harbour there is a 300 bedded District Hospital and a 100 bedded Sub Divisional Hospital is functional at Kakdwip which are headed by a Superintendent.

There are a several special units under Diamond Harbour Health District. There are Two Sick Neonatal Care Units at two subdivisions with eleven linked stabilisation units in the District. There is one Critical Care Unit at Diamond Harbour with a linked High Dependency Unit at Kakdwip. Linked Emergency Observation Wards have been sanctioned for Sagar Namkhana and Patharpratima Blocks. Emergency Observation wards are upcoming at Mathurapur and Raidighi Rural Hospital. There are facilities of Dialysis at Diamond Harbour District Hospital and Digital Xray. Three fair price shops are available at Diamond Harbour Kakdwip and Patharpratima.

Blood Banks are sanctioned at both subdivisions. The Diamond Harbour Blood Bank is fully functional and Kakdwip Blood bank is awaiting license from State and Central Drug Control. Blood storage Units are Functional at Sagar and Kakdwip.

The District Thalassemia Control Unit of South 24 Parganas is located at Diamond Harbour with a linked Thalassemia Day Care Centre.

A Nutrition Rehabilitation Centre will shortly become functional at Kakdwip for the care of malnourished Children.

The Health District has two Medicolegal Autopsy Centres under the Home Department fully functional at two subdivisions.

Upcoming Issues

The Hon’ble Chief Minister of West Bengal has announced for a New Medical College at Diamond Harbour and a 100 Bedded State General Hospital for Raidighi. Infrastructure works for both projects are underway. A Trauma Care Centre will also be available under the upcoming Medical College.

National & Other Health Programmes

The Health District in spite of having Six Sunderban Blocks has a Institutional Delivery Rate of 89 % and Immunization coverage of 98%. Fever Surveillance is good with an Annual Blood Slide Examination Rate of 11.2% (National Standard 10%) The Mosquito borne Diseases are under close observation and no major outbreaks have been reported over the last two years. Around 1.5 Lakh patients were admitted to hospitals last financial year with over 15 lakh OPD attendees and 2.3 lakh emergency patients were provided care.
