The journey of this Medical College and Hospital has been started on December,1974with the name of Diamond Harbour Sub-divisional Hospital, latter it has been converted to Diamond Harbour District Hospital on April, 2012 with 300 beds, and subsequently it has beenrenamed as Diamond Harbour Government Medical College and Hospital (DHGMCH) with 642 beds since June, 2018.
This Medical College is situated in the town Diamond Harbour, previously known as Hajipur, on the eastern bank of the Hooghly River, and it is the headquarters of the Diamond Harbour subdivision and Diamond Harbour police district.
First batch of MBBS students (100 students) took admission in August, 2019 after getting Letter of Permission (LOP) from National Medical Commission (NMC) in supersession of Medical council of India (MCI). I feel extremely honoured and privileged to be here during the admission of first batch of MBBS students as well as getting the opportunity to do my job in a newly constructed Medical College like this, since it is always challenging to develop a new Institution into a certain level of excellence.
Moreover, DHGMCH is aperipheral Medical College & Hospital, with 642 beds, having a huge remote catchment area (86% rural population) includingSundarban delta region which is mostly affected by natural calamities at regular interval.Diamond Harbour Government Medical college and Hospital is committed to provide quality health care services to safeguard the interest of such people.
Though this Medical College has started its journey barely an year ago, even in the situation of global pandemic of Covid-19, DHGMCH continues its developmentalactivitieswith the introduction of: (A) Paramedical Courses: DMLT (18 seats), DRD (6 seats) and D.Opth (6 seats) and (B) Diploma seats under National Board of Examinations in Anaesthesiology (4 seats), Chest & Respiratory Diseases (2 seats), Gynaecology& Obstetrics (4 seats), Ophthalmology (4 seats), Paediatrics (2 seats), Radio Diagnosis (6 seats). CT scanner machine and component separation unit of DHGMCH Blood centre are on the verge of installation.
Equipped with all the broad speciality departments along with CCU, SNCU, Dialysis Unit, Thalassemia control unit,NPCB&VI, NTEP,Blood centre, and excellent supporting staff, DHGMCH is able to meet the challenges of clinical care. Backed up by the specialized laboratory services of Pathology, Biochemistry and Microbiology we are able to strengthen our diagnostic and therapeutic care to the level of excellence. RT-PCR laboratory and Covid Hospital (Level-III & IV) are fully functional along with otherancillary measures to combat recent pandemic situation of Covid-19.
It is needless to say that Diamond Harbour Government Medical College has a student centred environment with a team of dedicated teachers and other supporting staff at the helm. Our team is dedicated to exert their effort for the developmentof professional attitudes amongst students in accordance with the spirit of competency based medical education to achieve the goal of making competent Indian Medical Graduates, for imparting research activities, and at the same time to render an satisfactory level of patient care services.
